Study shows athletes
winners in class
Boston Globe:
Nearly every main demographic group of top college
athletes exceeds the graduation rate for its student
body counterparts. According to federal graduation rates
released yesterday by the NCAA, 63 percent of Division 1
athletes who started college as freshmen in 2000
graduated in six years. That beats the graduation rate
for all students at Division 1 schools by 1 percent and
equaled last year's percentage. White athletes had a 67
percent graduation rate, compared with 64 percent for
white students overall. Black athletes also outperformed
their student body counterparts, 53-46 percent. "What
these data show are that student-athletes are good
students," said NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson. "There
tends to be a myth that student-athletes do not perform
well in the classroom. The data simply suggests
otherwise."

Washington Pride
Takes Bronze at Nationals
PVAHA Affiliate plays well at the 2007 USA Hockey National
Tournament
The Washington
Pride 19U team had an awesome week at Nationals. They started with a
7-2 victory over San Jose, a 1-1 tie with Assabet and a 3-1 victory
over Syracuse in the preliminary rounds. A quarterfinal 2-1 victory
over Colorado Selects landed them in the semi-finals against Assabet.
Despite outshooting Assabet, Assabet edged the Pride out 3-2. The
Mongtomery 14U Blue team also did very well. They defeated San Jose
in the preliminary round and had close games with Assabet and
Syracuse. They played a great quarterfinal game against Team
Illinois, the eventual National Champions. Both teams were
scoreless at the mid point in the game, but the talented Team
Illinois team was victorious.

Girls: Let's Play Hockey
As a result of our wonderful volunteer
parents and players, we enjoyed a hugely successful event in Prince William.
The smiles on the new girls'
faces were precious.
All volunteers were great by
helping in every way -- from
assisting the girls dress in their
equipment, to helping on the ice, to taking the girls on and off the ice when
needed.
The
Edge had awesome participation from the SkateQuest rink, speakers, raffle
donors, Cold Rush Hockey, the Prince William Panthers, and
the entire Prince William community. A special thank you to Baltimore Youth
Hockey for the donation and transportation of all the hockey equipment.
Without the donated equipment, this event could not have taken place!
About 60 girls from 6 to 19, both experienced players and those who
took their first steps dressed as hockey players, enjoyed the time spent
together. Several new players registered for the girls programs at Prince
William.
Thank you to everyone who made this event
such a success!
